Piloting the Future-Oriented Curriculum for Teachers: Advancing Sustainability Education

28.05.2026.

The piloting phase of the Future-Oriented Curriculum for Teachers within the UpSpace project represented a crucial step in strengthening sustainability education in schools. The curriculum was designed to equip teachers with comprehensive methodologies and practical resources to deliver future-oriented, sustainability-focused education. It supported the integration of key topics such as circular economy, upcycling, and responsible resource management across different subjects, making sustainability an integral part of everyday teaching.

A Practical and Innovative Teaching Approach

At the core of the piloting phase was a hands-on, practice-oriented approach. Teachers were not only introduced to theoretical frameworks, but also to ready-to-use lesson plans, classroom activities, and digital tools. These resources enabled them to:

  • Apply interdisciplinary teaching methods
  • Facilitate experiential and project-based learning
  • Use digital platforms to support collaborative learning

This approach reflected the broader goal of the project: transforming classrooms into spaces of experimentation, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. Through this process, teachers strengthened their own green competences while gaining confidence in delivering sustainability education effectively. The project specifically aimed to train educators in sustainable resource management and environmental awareness, ensuring a long-term impact in schools.

A European Network of Partner Schools

The piloting of the teacher curriculum was carried out across a network of European partner schools, ensuring diverse testing environments and cross-country collaboration. These included:

  • IIS Duca Abruzzi-Einaudi Pareto (Italy)
  • Mihailo Petrović Alas School (Serbia)
  • 5th Gymnasium of Thessaloniki (Greece)
  • Förderverein RUZ Reinhausen e.V. (Germany)

These schools collaborated to test the curriculum, provide teacher training, and ensure that the materials were adaptable, inclusive, and relevant across different educational systems.

Towards a Sustainable Transformation of Education

The piloting phase of the Future-Oriented Curriculum for Teachers ensured that innovative teaching methodologies were both effective and practical. By actively involving educators in testing and refining the materials, the UpSpace project promoted a sustainable transformation of education, empowering teachers to guide the next generation toward more responsible and environmentally conscious futures. At the end of the piloting phase, teachers provided feedback through structured questionnaires, which indicated high levels of satisfaction. They considered the course highly relevant to their educational practice and reported enhanced knowledge of sustainable development, natural resources, the circular economy and green skills.

As a result, the resource will be further refined for dissemination among teachers beyond the consortium, contributing to the broader promotion of environmental sustainability awareness across Europe.
