UpSpace: a step forward towards integrating sustainability into education

16.06.2026.

The UpSpace project was launched to strengthen collaboration between policy-makers, experts and other stakeholders in the education and sustainability sectors. The aim is to understand how education can tangibly support the transition towards a more sustainable society that is mindful of resource use.

Within this context, the project has published the Synopsis Report of consultations with key decision-makers a report on consultations with policy-makers and education sector leaders. This document is the result of different consultation activities carried out in the partner countries: Italy, Germany, Greece and Serbia

In recent months, experts, institutional representatives, policymakers and education professionals were involved in a series of structured discussions, including roundtables and interviews, to jointly explore strategies for integrating sustainability education into school curricula.

The analysis of these consultations revealed that education and training are not yet consistently integrated into policies related to the green transition. This is a significant limitation.

 Better integrating education into these policies can:

  • support the transition towards a more sustainable society;
  • connect different sectors, such as schools, institutions and the economy;
  • make sustainability education more effective.

The interviews and roundtables provided an opportunity to share ideas, experiences and possible solutions to jointly address environmental challenges.

The discussions were designed to include diverse voices and experiences. Participants included primary and secondary school teachers, university representatives, environmental authorities, policymakers, education staff and sustainability professionals, who offered valuable insights and showed strong motivation to strengthen environmental education in schools.

The consultations revealed that it is important to: give greater prominence to sustainability in school curricula, provide better training for teachers, develop practical environmental skills and strengthen collaboration between schools and institutions. Moreover, the consultations offered an opportunity to promote the project’s objectives at policy level.

Despite the differences between the countries involved, many challenges are shared and require joint solutions. Through the analysis of existing policies and dialogue between the various stakeholders, the partnership has worked to define common principles and strategies, included in the Synopsis Report of consultations with key decision-makers, which represents a significant outcome of the UpSpace project.

It demonstrates that dialogue between schools, institutions and experts is essential for building a more modern, inclusive and sustainable education system, fundamental for preparing the next generation for the challenges of the future.
